Sabong

A brief introduction of Sabong

Sabong is also known as cockfighting. Each side picks a rooster to stand out and fight with the other side. The Spanish began colonizing the Philippines in 1500, which is when Sabong first appeared. So technically, this sport comes from the West. The Philippine government values this tradition and hence first held an “Olympic of Cockfight” event; now this event is also very popular in nearby countries.

How to play Sabong?

So the game is pretty simple; before the real fight, you can bet on either side of the rooster. The rooster, which can be picked up to attend a cockfight, was trained like a boxer. So usually nobody knows which rooster will win, and that’s what makes Sabong so exciting.

Ulatan – There are few curtesys before the real fight, like the boxers will touch their gloves before the real punch. Ulatan means at first, each rooster will be put on the stage to measure their height, weight, size, etc. The purpose is to let the players fully realise what kind of cock they put a wedger on.

Ruweda – After displaying the cock, the owner will grab the cock and circle around the arena. The purpose is to get much more wedger on its cock, and then once the cock wins, the owner can earn several times in return.

Fight – Then that’s the most exciting part, the fighting. Each rooster ties a knife on their nail called Sabong Tari, as shown below. The fight will last until one cock dies or runs away; if the cock passes out, then the owner will pour cold water to wake him up to continue the fight. Hence, if a cock loses, he can’t participate anymore because he either loses an eye or has a severe injury.
